I am a great believer in local democracy.  That is local services being delivered locally by bodies or organisations who are accountable to local people through the ballot box.  That is why I am dismayed a little to read about the Government back tracking on their promise to bring in to play directly elected members of police authorities.

Although this is not the full blown model of democratic policing, that I and others in the Conservative Party believe in, it is better than the top down target driven micro management that the current Labour Government is inflicting up on local police forces.

Until the police have local direction delivered by people who have the backing and votes of the people they police, targets and priorities will not be local.  I believe that elected police commissioners will revolutionise local policing.  It will give leadership and direction that can all to often be lacking.
