pbox8-250If you are one of the many people who has opted to vote by post, congratulations!  Hundreds of people across Kirkham, Wesham and the villages nearby have responded to our recent mailing and applied to vote in this way.

You should, in the next day or so, have received your postal vote.  You’ll receive one for the County election and one for the European election.  Sadly, every year, some people don’t complete or return their postal vote as the law requires.  So , here’s a few tips to make sure your vote is counted:

FOR THE COUNTY BALLOT PAPER:

  • Put a ‘x’ next to one of the three candidates listed.  I’m hoping that will be Simon Renwick…
  • Put that in the brown envelope
  • Sign the declaration and add your date of birth – don’t worry – this is just to help with spot checks. The data isn’t recorded anywhere.
  • Put the brown envelope and the declaration in the white envelope and post them back as soon as you can (some people lose theirs!)

FOR THE EUROPEAN ELECTIONS:

  • Tick the Party you wish to see elected (you have a choice of 13.  Again, I’m hoping that’s Conservative.  I don’t think we have seen any of the other party’s candidates in Fylde this year)
  • Then follow the same procedure as above

Your vote really does matter in these elections.  Here in Lancashire, the Conservatives need just 0.3% more votes to beat Gordon Brown and New Labour.  No other Party or candidate can do that.

gad-logoThis Saturday, Cllr. Simon Renwick has arranged for a Green Action Day to take place at Kirkham Woods.  We’ll be litter picking and generally doing our bit to look after the woods.  Bring your own gloves and we’ll provide the rest…

  • Saturday 25 April
  • Meet at Station Road
  • 1-2pm

Mud slinging.  Name calling.  Yah boo politics.  Does it ever win respect or votes?  I don’t think it does.  Isn’t it refreshing when politicians don’t slag off their opponents but talk about their record and work with everyone in the community?

That’s why I won’t be responding to the extremely negative and somewhat hysterical attack on me in the propaganda being distributed by the ‘Independents’.  Instead, I will continue to listen to your views – the results from the Kirkham survey continue to flood in – more than 500 so far.  And, in another break from the norm of politics, I’m not going to make promises I can’t keep.

I make just one pledge to everyone in Kirkham, Wesham and nearby villages: I will always try my best to put the needs of our community first and Party politics second.

I’m grateful for all the emails, phone calls and comments on this blog about the plans to build yet more houses on land here in Wesham.  Most of the comments concern:

  • The impact of more people such as places at local schools - several mums and dads have raised this with me
  • The increase in road traffic, particularly during the building period
  • The failure of the County Council, AND County Councillors, to keep Wesham informed, particularly as the company applying to build here was involved in discussions with the County Council

Among the comments, are really important points raised by the secretary of the local group of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, including: “CPRE are monitoring emerging proposals which threaten loss of countryside and agricultural land in rural parts of the Borough, including Kirkham, Warton, Wrea Green, Elswick, Whyndyke Farm and Marton Moss – so called ‘Strategic Development Areas’. Re the site at Wesham, we are concerned to hear from you that the farmer has been informed of the potential loss of use of this land. We will certainly value your support in opposing any further large scale housing developments at Wesham.”

We will, as always, keep you informed on this really important local issue.  Meanwhile, David Cameron has confirmed to the CPRE that he wants local people to have more of a say in issues such as this.
